5 Tips for Time Management

You Don’t Need More Time—You Need a New Relationship With It

How many times have you caught yourself saying, “If I just had more time…”?

Maybe one more day in the week, a few extra hours in the day, and then everything would finally feel under control.

I want to gently offer you something different: it’s not about having more time. It’s about how you’re choosing to use the time you already have.

And I say this with so much love (and lived experience). I haven’t worked evenings, weekends, or Fridays for over 20 years… while running multiple businesses. Not because I had more time than you, but because I learned how to relate to it differently.

In this week’s podcast episode, we talked about one of the biggest challenges designers face: the feeling that there simply isn’t enough time to run your business and still have a life.

Shift From Scarcity to Ownership

The first place this begins is in your mindset.

When you tell yourself there isn’t enough time, your brain believes you, and starts operating from pressure and lack. But when you shift into “I have enough time, I’m in control of how I use it,” everything starts to change.

Time is finite. It’s your most valuable resource. But the shift that will change everything is realizing that you are in control of how it’s spent.

And that means you also get to decide what your life looks like.

Find Your Genius Time

Not all time is created equal.

You’ve probably heard of the 80/20 rule — 20% of what you do creates 80% of your results. The challenge is that most of your day gets filled with the other 80%… the busywork, the reacting, the things that don’t truly move your business forward.

When you slow down and really look at what’s working… what’s actually creating clients, revenue, and momentum… you begin to see your “genius time.”

And then comes the real work: protecting it.

That might mean saying no more often. It might mean noticing where you’re overcommitting, or where you’re stepping in to “rescue” situations that aren’t truly yours to fix. It might even mean letting go of things you’ve always done, simply because you’ve always done them.

This is where your power is.

Structure Creates Freedom

I know structure can feel restrictive, especially as a creative. But the truth is, structure is what gives you your freedom back.

When you begin to track your time (even just for a few weeks) you start to see where it’s actually going. And from there, you can make better decisions.

Time blocking becomes your best friend. Giving specific days to studio work and others to meetings or site visits creates focus. Blocking smaller chunks of time for tasks helps you stay intentional instead of drifting.

And batching similar tasks? It’s a game changer. It saves you energy, keeps you in flow, and allows you to get more done in less time.

But one of the most important things I want you to hear is this: put your life in the calendar first.

Your family time. Your rest. Your joy. Your life.

Because work will expand to fill whatever space you give it… but that doesn’t mean it should take everything.

Small Daily Decisions, Big Life Shifts

You don’t need a complete overhaul to change your relationship with time.

Start each day with intention. Ask yourself: What are the three most important things I can accomplish today?

Focus there. Let that be enough.

Because this isn’t about doing more, it’s about doing what matters.

And when you begin to shift your mindset, protect your genius time, and create structure around your days, something beautiful happens:

You get your life back. And that, truly, is the goal.
