What does leadership actually mean for an interior designer?

In this episode, I’m joined by Valerie, one of our coaches at IDBA, to break leadership down into its core components—starting with mindset. A true leader operates from a growth mindset, where challenges are seen as opportunities to learn, not proof of failure. Instead of asking “Did I do it wrong?” the better question becomes, “What can I learn from this?”

This shift alone can transform how you approach your business. When you remove blame and focus on lessons, you stop repeating the same mistakes and start improving—incrementally, but consistently. Even a 2–5% improvement each time compounds into massive growth over time.

Confidence is another key pillar of leadership—but it doesn’t come from waiting until you’re ready. It comes from doing the thing before you feel ready. Every project, every decision, and every step forward builds that confidence muscle.

One of the biggest obstacles? Comparison. When you measure yourself against others, you automatically lose—because your mind will always find a way to make someone else seem better. True leadership comes from running your own race, staying focused on your vision, and trusting your unique path.

The conversation also highlights the importance of staying in your “genius zone.” As a business owner, your role is to bring in clients, create concepts, and lead projects—not to get stuck doing low-value tasks. This is where the 80/20 rule becomes critical: 20% of your efforts drive 80% of your results.

Finally, the episode dives into visionary thinking—arguably the most important leadership skill. Just like designing a space, building a business requires a clear vision, a strategic plan, and the ability to execute steps in the right order. Without that vision, you end up busy—but not productive.

Leadership is not about doing more. It’s about thinking differently, acting intentionally, and guiding both your business and your clients toward a clear outcome.
