Leadership isn’t just a mindset, it’s how you show up in every project, every conversation, and every decision in your business.

In this episode, Valerie and I break down what happens when designers stay stuck in the “technician” role, focused on doing the work instead of leading the process. The result? Clients take over, projects lose direction, and designers end up overwhelmed, underpaid, and out of control.

True leadership starts by clearly laying out the process. When your client understands what happens next, what decisions they need to make, and how the project will unfold, they relax, and they follow you. Without that clarity, they step in and try to lead instead.

This episode also highlights the importance of holding your ground. Leadership means standing in your expertise, even when it’s uncomfortable. When you allow clients, contractors, or others to override your process, you don’t just lose control, you compromise the final result and your reputation.

Another key shift is moving out of the “I have to do everything” mindset. Growth happens when you delegate, trust your team, and focus on the highest-value parts of your role, vision, communication, and strategy. Holding onto everything doesn’t make you better, it makes you the bottleneck.

And finally, leadership requires boundaries. Without them, burnout is inevitable. When you constantly say yes, stay available at all times, and put yourself last, your creativity suffers and your business becomes unsustainable.

The most successful designers don’t work more, they lead better. They protect their time, communicate clearly, and build systems that allow their business to grow without sacrificing their life.
