Asking for money isn’t just a business skill—it’s a mindset shift.
In this episode, I dive into the moment that stops so many designers in their tracks: saying the number out loud. Even when the scope is clear, the budget is agreed upon, and the project is ideal, asking for a large fee can feel uncomfortable and intimidating.
This hesitation isn’t about math—it’s about belief. The internal dialogue of “Am I worth that?” or “What will they think?” creates a mental barrier that keeps you playing small. I call this the “glass ceiling”—and every designer must break through it to grow.
The truth is, high design fees are not only justified—they’re necessary. Large projects often span months or even years, requiring thousands of decisions, constant problem-solving, and full responsibility for the outcome. When you look at it as long-term work and leadership, the fee makes sense.
Another key insight is understanding that your client’s money story is not your own. What feels like a large number to you may be completely reasonable—or even expected—for them. When you project your own fears onto your client, you limit your earning potential before the conversation even begins.
The breakthrough comes when you remove emotion from the delivery. I call this the “pass the salt” moment—presenting your fee in a calm, neutral, matter-of-fact way. No hesitation, no apology, no explanation. Just clarity and confidence.
And here’s the key: confidence isn’t something you wait for—it’s something you practice. By rehearsing your fee out loud, repeatedly, you train your body to stay calm and steady. Over time, what once felt impossible becomes natural.
When you can clearly and confidently ask for your fee, everything changes. Clients trust you more, your business becomes more profitable, and you step fully into your value as a professional designer.
