What is your relationship with money?

Many interior designers believe they’re struggling with pricing, client budgets, or raising their fees, when in reality, they’re struggling with the stories they’ve carried about money for years.

In this episode, I sit down with IDBA’s Head Mindset Coach, Valerie Priester, to explore how our earliest experiences with money shape the way we run our businesses today. Whether you grew up hearing “money doesn’t grow on trees,” watched your parents argue about finances, or learned that asking for money was uncomfortable, those beliefs often follow you into every client conversation.

We discuss why designers frequently underestimate what clients are willing to invest, avoid important budget conversations, or overdeliver because they believe they must work harder to deserve higher fees. These patterns often have very little to do with clients, and everything to do with our relationship with money.

One of the biggest lessons from this conversation is that money itself isn’t good or bad. It’s simply energy. When designers begin healing their money stories, they stop chasing projects from fear and start allowing opportunities to flow naturally through confidence, clarity, and value.

Ultimately, changing your money story isn’t about charging more for the sake of it. It’s about developing a healthier mindset that allows you to serve your clients well, build a profitable business, and confidently receive what your expertise is worth.
