Do you need help in your interior design business but have no idea who to hire—or what you should even delegate?
That’s where many designers begin. You’re overwhelmed, projects are piling up, and you know you can’t keep doing everything yourself. But simply hiring another person doesn’t automatically solve the problem. In fact, hiring someone you have to constantly train and manage can create even more work.
In this episode, I sit down with Evelyn McDougall and Shanna Rose of 4D Biz to discuss a smarter approach to hiring virtual support. Shanna shares how being physically unable to work after a serious accident forced her to learn how to delegate, build a team, and create a business that didn’t depend entirely on her.
We discuss why the goal isn’t to find one “unicorn” who can do everything. Instead, designers should identify the specific areas where they need support and match those needs with people who specialize in them. Evelyn and Shanna break virtual assistance into three primary categories: design, administration, and marketing.
We also explore why fractional support can make so much sense for interior designers. Design businesses naturally experience busy periods and slower periods, and different phases of a project require different skill sets. Fractional support allows you to access the expertise you need when you need it rather than carrying a full-time employee through every season of the business.
Most importantly, we talk about identifying what you should delegate first. Look for work you aren’t particularly skilled at, tasks that consistently take too much of your time, work you simply don’t enjoy doing, and responsibilities that arrive in waves and overwhelm you when they hit. Procurement and drafting are two common examples.
The right VA isn’t simply another person to manage. With clear systems, defined roles, and the right specialist, support should give you back the time and capacity to focus on the work only you can do.
