What if increasing your profit didn’t require completely reinventing your interior design business?

In this episode, I share five profit boosters that may seem like small adjustments but can make a significant difference when you put them together.

First, pick the right market. Your ideal client needs to align not only with the work you enjoy but also with a profitable business model. That could mean traditional residential clients, or it could mean specializing in technical drawings, new construction, model homes, accessories, or styling. Don’t assume your design business has to fit inside one particular box.

Next, look closely at the products and services you’re selling and how you’re pricing them. Selling more expensive products can require the same amount of work as selling inexpensive ones, while better wholesale relationships and retail pricing can significantly improve your margins. Your expertise also has value beyond the hours you spend, the more valuable the problem you solve, the more valuable your service becomes.

We also discuss why being inexpensive when you’re starting out can work against you, why unnecessary discounting damages your positioning, and how clear scopes of work protect you from giving away additional services through scope creep.

Then it’s time to grow your customer base by understanding where your leads come from and creating a consistent path from lead to signed contract.

Finally, increase your average sale. Present complete rooms instead of individual products, establish the budget before sourcing, and give clients opportunities to choose beautiful upgrades.

The goal isn’t simply to work more. It’s to make strategic improvements throughout your business so the work you’re already doing becomes more profitable.
