What if the thing keeping your design business from growing isn’t a lack of knowledge, but your willingness to leave what’s familiar?
In this episode, I’m joined by IDBA Mindset Coach Valerie Priester to talk about getting out of your comfort zone. A comfort zone is simply a familiar place, and sometimes we stay there even when it isn’t giving us the results we want because doing something different feels scarier.
In a design business, that fear can show up everywhere. You might avoid changing how you price, hesitate to establish stronger client boundaries, delay hiring the help you need, or turn down an exciting opportunity because you don’t know exactly how to do it yet.
But you don’t need to know the entire path before you begin. As Valerie explains, growth comes from taking action into the unknown. Take the first step, and the next step begins to reveal itself. You are more resourceful than fear wants you to believe.
We also discuss how to separate fear-based stories from facts. Look at the evidence of what you’ve already accomplished. Look at your numbers before deciding you can’t afford to hire. Become aware of the inner voice saying, “I can’t do this” or “Who do I think I am?” and ask whether that story is actually true.
Most importantly, don’t be afraid to ask for help. You aren’t supposed to know everything.
The next time you’re standing on the edge of a decision, consider what might happen if instead of retreating to what’s familiar, you said yes.
Take one step forward and ask yourself: How good could it get?
