Episode 46: Leadership Part 2

What does it take for a designer to be a good leader? Let’s find out.

Valerie Priester and I are back for Part 2 of this episode all about leadership. In Part 1 we talked about learning from your mistakes, building confidence, and getting clear on your vision, and in this episode, we’re covering the self-care side of leadership: how to stand up for yourself, set boundaries, and outsource.

Stepping into your role as a leader might be challenging if you were brought up to be a people pleaser and perfectionist, but it’s a really important step on your path to success in your design business. You need to be able to lead a job, a team, and even yourself.

This episode is a reminder that an effective leader sets boundaries and puts herself first so that she can show up as her best self for her team and clients.

Topics We Cover in This Episode:

  • Maintaining control of your job
  • How to stand your ground
  • The importance of clear communication
  • The mindset of an effective leader
  • What tasks to outsource
  • Why you need to trust your team members
  • How to avoid being the bottleneck in your business
  • Prioritizing your wellbeing
  • Setting boundaries and sticking to them
  • The lies that burnout tells you

Prioritizing yourself is prioritizing your business. You are responsible for making sure that you have the time and energy to show up at your best as a designer. Trust me, emptying your cup without ever taking time to fill it is not doing your clients any favors in the long term.
