Shine Your Light

Date

I want to talk to you today about something that’s quietly humming in the background of the design world right now—a growing sense of uncertainty.

Whether it’s changes in the economy, supply chain shifts, or just a general sense of “What’s next?”, I know how easy it can be to shrink back, to get small, to sit in the corner and wait it out.

But I’m here to tell you—this is not the time to disappear. In fact, it’s just the opposite.

Now Is the Time to Shine, Not Shrink

During uncertain times, people turn inward. They cocoon, they stay home more, and home becomes a safe haven.

That means what we do as designers becomes more important than ever. We’re the ones who bring comfort, beauty, and stability into the spaces where people are seeking peace.

So even though it might feel tempting to step back, I encourage you to lean in. Your clients still need you, even if furniture costs more or timelines stretch longer. They’re still investing in their homes—and in you.

Remember how we handled the pandemic? Many of us had our best years ever once we figured out how to pivot.

That mindset—of looking for the opportunity within the challenge—is what will carry us through again. There’s an old symbol (from ancient calligraphy) that means both disaster and opportunity. It’s a reminder that when one door closes, another opens. But we only see those new doors if we stay awake, stay present, and stay visible.

Build Trust by Being Consistent

Now is the time to be a steady light for your clients.

Others may back off or hide away, but not you. If you’re showing up with a newsletter, keep sending it. If you’re active on social media, don’t stop now. Keep doing your networking, keep those conversations flowing. That consistent presence builds trust. It says, “I’m still here. I’ve got you.”

That’s especially powerful in a world that feels wobbly.

Your visibility and consistency position you as the go-to designer in your community. And when people are looking for guidance—someone who has answers and calm in the chaos—they’ll find you.

But you can’t help if you disappear. So stay visible, stay steady, and keep letting people know you’re here to help.

Stay Positive, Protect Your Energy, and Keep Moving

Momentum in marketing is everything. It’s not something you do only when you need clients—it’s something you build and nurture over time. Don’t stop just because things feel uncertain. Keep your systems simple, make them sustainable, and stay active.

And please, protect your energy. Be mindful of how much news you’re consuming. Stay informed, yes, but don’t let the negativity drown your spark. Your positive focus is what draws the right clients to you. Even if you’re faking it a bit some days (we all do!), that steady optimism matters more than you know.

So hold your shape, stay present, and prepare to pivot when the time comes. Because it will.

There are opportunities already beginning to show, and if you’re standing tall and steady, you’ll be ready to walk through the right door the moment it opens.

We’ve done it before, and we’ll do it again.
