Today I want to talk to you about two designers. They both live in the same city, and in the same period of time. One has good clients, collects nice design fees, works with budgets in the $200-$300k range, has regained her freedom, and is very happy.
The other designer has a very different situation. She bills a few hours at a time, works with budgets in the $5-$10k range, is just able to meet her expenses, works unpredictable hours, and isn’t happy at all.
So, how can two designers living at the same time in the same city have such different businesses?
It has to do with having an abundance mindset instead of a scarcity mindset.
A scarcity mindset causes you to focus on the circumstances and clients who don’t pay that much. But the reality is that lack of money isn’t circumstance; it’s about mindset.
When you have an abundance mindset, you expect clients who pay well. You also have the mindset to turn down those clients who don’t have the budget because they aren’t for you.
The fact is that big fees happen all the time. They’re great to have because you only need a few projects a year, and you can free up your time.
It takes two things to step out of scarcity and into abundance. The first is a mindset shift to believing that the world Is abundant, good clients exist, and you deserve to have them. The other is figuring out how to do this. You need to calculate the right amount of fees for the job, how to write the contract, and how to present it to your client.
