What’s Your Money Story?

The Money Story That’s Quietly Running Your Business

If you’ve ever found yourself thinking, My clients would never pay that, or I just can’t ask for that much, I want you to know something important: you’re probably not looking at reality.

You’re looking at a story. And those stories are incredibly powerful.

Valerie and I spend a lot of time helping designers uncover the money stories that quietly shape their businesses, and here’s what we’ve learned:

They’re often invisible because we’ve carried them for so long. They feel like facts. But more often than not, they’re simply beliefs we picked up years ago that no longer belong in the business you’re building today.

That’s what we’re getting into in the most recent podcast episode. Let’s talk about it.

Your Clients Don’t See Money the Way You Do

Most of our beliefs about money didn’t start with us. They started when we were children, listening to things like, Money doesn’t grow on trees, We can’t afford that, or watching parents argue over finances.

As children, we made sense of those moments the best we could. The problem is, those childhood conclusions can still be running the show decades later.

The interesting part is that your ideal clients usually have a completely different relationship with money than you do. They weren’t hired because they wanted someone to save them $200. They hired you because they want your expertise, your creativity, and your ability to create something extraordinary.

Yet so many designers quietly edit themselves.

You find the perfect piece, then put it back because you’ve already decided your client won’t buy it.

You avoid talking about budget because it feels uncomfortable.

You hesitate to charge what you’re worth because your own money story starts whispering in your ear.

The trouble is, that’s your story, not your client’s.

Money Flows Where You’re Willing to Receive It

One of the biggest mindset shifts I ever had was realizing that money isn’t good or bad. It’s simply energy.

For years, I lived in “just enough.”

Just enough to keep the studio open. Just enough to pay the bills. No extra. No ease.

When I finally changed my relationship with money instead of trying to work harder for it, everything changed.

Think of it like an infinity loop. You offer your gifts: your creativity, leadership, and expertise, and your clients give back through money. That’s a healthy exchange. But when fear, scarcity, or old beliefs interrupt that flow, you end up blocking the very abundance you’re asking for.

So instead of chasing projects or worrying whether clients will say yes, get curious.

What do you actually believe about money? About wealthy people? About asking to be paid well?

Those answers tell you exactly where your next breakthrough lives.

Healing your relationship with money isn’t about becoming someone different. It’s about letting go of beliefs that were never serving you in the first place.

And when you do, you’ll find yourself leading with far more confidence, having easier conversations, and allowing the right opportunities to flow toward you instead of feeling like you have to chase them.

Until then, design something beautiful… and get paid what you’re worth.

With love,

Terri
